Bonanza bikes

Materials: steel tube, foam, tape, ball

Playing on the road

The objects are reminiscent of bonanza bikes - the dream of all boys in the 70s. The so-called banana saddle was copied from the “real” motorcycle and acted as a striking symbol of masculinity for adolescents. Medically, the banana saddle was extremely controversial - it was feared that the development of a boy into a man could be hindered or damaged by a bonanza bike. The desire to have one was therefore all the greater, even greater was the concern of the parents.

The objects rest on balls and only have saddles, but no mechanisms. Perhaps they are an image of the desire to still be a child and yet already an adult at the same time. Different balls are used: basketballs, volleyballs and original “Champions League” balls. And a medicine ball. Through the choice of balls and the shape of the saddles, each group of these objects tries to form their own characters with minimal means and create a kind of “gang”. Like a bunch of boys playing in the street. At some point they are called home, the dream is over for today. What remains is the sculpture as a pair of opposites between movement and standstill, physicality and technology, desire and reality.
